A senior security analyst, Bulama Bukarti, has raised a fresh alarm over the growing influence of Boko Haram on social media, particularly TikTok.
Bukarti, who is a senior fellow at the Extremism Policy Unit of the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, made this known during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
According to him, the terror group is now exploiting TikTok to spread its extremist ideology. He revealed that Boko Haram members are actively running TikTok accounts where they go live, engage with viewers, and justify their violent activities in the Hausa language.
These broadcasts include answering questions and responding to comments from their followers.
“In fact, just this week, a Boko Haram member posted a 10-minute video attacking me for condemning their violent acts,” Bukarti revealed.
In a disturbing update, he also disclosed that the group now operates unmanned drones to monitor military formations in the northeast. This technological upgrade has emboldened the group to carry out multiple attacks on military super camps in areas like Sabon Gari.
“In the past three months alone, there have been more than seven attacks on Nigerian military camps by Boko Haram. They stormed the camps, overpowered soldiers, stole weapons, food, and medical supplies before fleeing into the bush,” he added.
His revelation comes shortly after Senator Ali Ndume of Borno South lamented that the state had lost 100 soldiers and 280 civilians to Boko Haram attacks within just six months.
