In a move set to strengthen Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, Russia has pledged to share its newly developed counter-terrorism strategies, reaffirming the strong ties between both nations.
Russia Pledges Support for Nigeria’s Counter-Terrorism Efforts
The Russian government has expressed readiness to support Nigeria by sharing advanced counter-terrorism strategies it developed during special operations across 39 countries.
This commitment was made during a courtesy visit by Lt.-Gen. Andrei Averianov, Russian envoy, to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, in Abuja on Monday.
Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, disclosed in a statement that Averianov emphasized Russia’s experience in tackling evolving security threats like Al-Qaeda and Boko Haram.
He recalled Russia’s historic fight against Nazism 80 years ago, noting that the security landscape now faces asymmetric threats requiring innovative responses.
Russia Commits to Providing Weapons and Expertise
During the meeting, the Russian envoy assured Nigeria of comprehensive support, particularly in supplying a full range of weapons needed by the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).
Averianov highlighted Russia’s eagerness to assist Nigeria as “brothers in arms,” with weapons and operational strategies necessary to defeat terrorism.
The envoy also expressed Russia’s admiration for Nigeria’s resilience and success in counterterrorism efforts over the years, pledging ongoing partnership to build a safer future for coming generations.
Nigeria Calls for Training and Maintenance Support
Responding to the Russian delegation, Gen. Musa warmly welcomed their support on behalf of President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian military.
Musa stressed the importance of strengthening partnerships, especially in specialized military training and operational collaboration.
He emphasized the need for expanded training in Special Operations for the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Musa requested assistance in acquiring special boats, fast attack crafts, amphibious training, and critical maintenance for existing Russian-made platforms, many of which are currently unserviceable.
Intelligence Sharing and In-Country Repairs Requested
Further strengthening ties, Musa appealed for enhanced intelligence sharing between Russia and Nigeria.
He pointed out that Russia’s experience from extended operations, especially in the Sahel region, could significantly boost Nigeria’s counterterrorism tactics.
The CDS also thanked the Russian Federation for fulfilling its earlier commitments, including the personal delivery of military equipment and the deployment of experts to assist with testing and operational support.
Additionally, Musa requested Russian experts’ presence in Nigeria for equipment maintenance or arrangements to backload faulty equipment to Russia for repairs.
With Russia’s renewed commitment and Nigeria’s readiness, the partnership promises to deepen cooperation in the fight against terrorism and bolster regional security.
