In a majestic celebration of Yoruba heritage, the ancient city of Oyo came alive as dignitaries from across Nigeria gathered to witness the historic coronation of Oba Abimbola Owoade as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo. This momentous event marks a new chapter following the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi in April 2022.
Among those who graced the royal occasion were some of Nigeria’s most revered traditional rulers, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, and the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III.
The high-powered guest list also featured the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, and former Military Administrator of Oyo State, Oladayo Popoola.
Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the coronation, Chief Adelabu spoke glowingly about the significance of the Alaafin’s throne. He described it as “a symbol of cultural pride, unity, and the enduring legacy of one of Africa’s most powerful empires.” He also emphasized the Alaafin’s dual role as a custodian of tradition and a bridge to modern governance.
“This is more than a coronation,” Adelabu remarked. “It’s a reaffirmation of the strength, unity, and rich legacy of the Yoruba people.”
In his own speech, Governor Seyi Makinde debunked claims of political influence in the selection process. He revealed that some individuals had attempted to lobby him for the position, but Ifa—the Yoruba spiritual oracle—guided the decision independently.
“Let those who came to lobby me stand up,” Makinde challenged. “But Ifa chose differently, and I respected that divine decision.”
He added that he conducted his own investigation and discovered some contenders were influenced by financial motives, which he refused to entertain.
Also speaking at the event, Iba Gani Adams clarified his role in the royal cabinet, stating that while he wasn’t part of the selection committee, his duty is to ensure peace and progress in Oyo and across Yorubaland.
“I’m not here to choose a king but to stand by our traditions and protect the land,” Adams said.
As the drums echoed through the ancient city and cultural displays captivated the audience, Oba Abimbola Owoade expressed heartfelt gratitude to the people of Oyo. He promised to uphold the legacy of his forebears and serve with honor, wisdom, and dedication.
This coronation was more than a ceremony—it was a revival of Yoruba pride and a celebration of cultural continuity. All eyes are now on the new Alaafin as he steps into his royal destiny.
