Rivers State Sets August 9 for Fresh LG Elections Following Supreme Court Ruling

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has officially scheduled August 9, 2025, for fresh Local Government Council elections across the state.

RSIEC Chairman, retired Justice Adolphus Enebeli, made the announcement during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the commission’s headquarters on Aba Road, Port Harcourt.

The event also marked the unveiling of the official timetable and guidelines for the 2025 local government elections.

RSIEC Vows to Ensure Credible Elections

Justice Enebeli reaffirmed the commission’s dedication to conducting a free, fair, and transparent election process.

He urged all political parties and stakeholders to strictly adhere to the electoral guidelines to maintain the integrity of the election.

He also outlined RSIEC’s plans to hold consultations, sensitization programs, and private meetings with political parties to address any concerns and ensure a smooth electoral process.

Impact of Supreme Court Ruling on LG Elections

Justice Enebeli referenced the recent Supreme Court judgment that nullified the October 5, 2024, local government elections, describing it as a temporary setback.

He emphasized that the ruling only strengthened the commission’s resolve to conduct a credible election in August.

The meeting was attended by key stakeholders, including political party leaders, traditional rulers, security agencies, members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), religious organizations, media representatives, civil society groups, and NGOs.

Why the Supreme Court Sacked Rivers LG Chairmen

The Supreme Court, in its ruling last Friday, declared the elections that brought in the 23 local government chairmen null and void due to violations of Section 150 of the Electoral Act.

As a result, fresh elections became necessary to fill the vacant positions.

The political landscape in Rivers State remains tense following the court’s decision, with various stakeholders closely monitoring developments ahead of the August 9 elections.
