A recently surfaced viral video has thrown the Nigeria Police Force into a fresh wave of public backlash after it allegedly showed several officers receiving cash gifts from a Chinese man and his family.
In the widely circulated footage, uniformed officers are seen lining up to collect what appears to be N5,000 each from the foreign national. The video has triggered outrage across social media, with many Nigerians expressing disappointment over what they describe as another dent in the already fragile image of the police.
Police Authorities Deny Knowledge
When contacted, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that he was unaware of such an incident. Likewise, the Lagos State Police Command quickly distanced itself from the video, clarifying through its spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, that the incident did not take place in Lagos as speculated.
Public Figures React Strongly
The video drew sharp criticism from prominent voices. Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate under the African Action Congress (AAC), didn’t mince words. He condemned the act and reignited his call for the removal of Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
“This is exactly why I insist that illegal IGP Kayode Egbetokun has no place in the police force. It’s a national disgrace,” Sowore declared in a Facebook post.
Also lending his voice, human rights activist and online commentator Martins Victor Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkBlackMan, labelled the act as “disgraceful, disrespectful, and degrading.” He urged the police to come clean and handle the situation with transparency.
Nigerians Demand Accountability
This latest scandal has intensified calls for deep-rooted reforms within the police force. Many citizens are demanding that those involved be identified and held accountable to send a strong message that unethical behavior will not be tolerated.
As public confidence continues to dwindle, pressure mounts on the police leadership to address the growing concerns around integrity, accountability, and professionalism.
