Tinubu Dissolves UNIZIK Governing Council and Removes Vice Chancellor

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken decisive action by dissolving the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, and removing Prof.

Bernard Ifeanyi Odoh as Vice Chancellor. Additionally, Mrs. Rosemary Ifoema Nwokike, the university’s registrar, has also been relieved of her duties.

The Governing Council, chaired by Ambassador Greg Ozumba Mbadiwe, included members Hafiz Oladejo, Augustine Onyedebelu, Engr. Amioleran Osahon, and Rtd. Gen. Funsho Oyeneyin. According to a statement from Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, the dismissal stems from allegations of procedural violations in the appointment of the Vice Chancellor.

The statement revealed that the Council’s actions sparked disputes between the university’s Senate and the Governing Council, prompting federal intervention.

Tinubu emphasized the importance of adhering to the university’s governing laws in appointments.

In a related development, the President also approved the removal of Engr. Ohieku Muhammed Salami, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State.

Salami was accused of unlawfully suspending the Vice Chancellor and refusing to comply with directives from the Federal Ministry of Education.

The Presidency reiterated its commitment to maintaining order in universities and improving the nation’s education system.

Tinubu warned councils to avoid creating unnecessary distractions and focus on advancing education standards.
