Presidency Apologizes Over Errors in Appointment List Amid Accusations of Lopsided Appointments
The Nigerian Presidency has publicly apologized following the release of a flawed list of federal appointees meant to counter accusations that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been favouring individuals from his home region.
President Tinubu’s appointments have sparked growing criticism, especially from opposition politicians who claim that his administration violates the federal character principle by favouring his ethnic group.
One such critic is Senator Ali Ndume, a key APC figure from Borno South, who in a recent interview with Arise Television, boldly called out the imbalance in the President’s appointments—even though they share the same political party.
To address the allegations, the Presidency released a list outlining the geo-political distribution of Tinubu’s appointees:
South West – 29
North West – 35
South-South – 22
South East – 16
North Central – 25
North East – 24
However, the release has triggered even more controversy, as it omitted the name of one of Tinubu’s most prominent appointees—his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, who is also from the South West.
The exclusion cast further doubt on the authenticity of the list and reinforced claims that the South East remains significantly underrepresented in the administration.
As debates intensified across social media platforms, Sunday Dare, the President’s Special Adviser on Media & Public Communication, took to X (formerly Twitter) to issue an apology.
“We have noticed a number of errors in the list of appointments tweeted. We are sorry. We will provide an updated list later. Thank you,” Dare wrote.
Despite the apology, there was no clarification on why Gbajabiamila’s name was left out, leaving many Nigerians demanding transparency and fairness in the appointment process.
