“Power Struggle in PDP: Wike’s Camp Faces Allegations Amid Calls for Leadership Change”

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is experiencing internal conflicts involving key figures and factions. Former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and his supporters are backing the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, amid calls for his resignation. Some party members allege that Wike’s group plans to suspend opponents, particularly those loyal to the 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, at various party levels.

Four governors—Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), and Agbu Kefas (Taraba)—align with Wike in supporting Damagum. Conversely, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara, and Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke oppose Damagum’s continued acting leadership.

Since Damagum’s appointment following Senator Iyorchia Ayu’s removal, he has faced criticism and increasing calls for his resignation. At the PDP’s 98th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on April 18, leaders approved forming reconciliation and disciplinary committees, planned ward and state congresses, and tasked the North Central caucus with consulting on a replacement for Damagum. However, the 99th NEC meeting has been postponed multiple times, now suspended indefinitely.

The PDP Governors Forum and the Board of Trustees have urged the National Working Committee (NWC) to convene the NEC by February 2025 to address outstanding issues, including appointing a new chairman from the North Central region. The anti-Wike/Damagum faction believes these delays aim to protect Wike’s interests and maintain his influence over the party.

In response, both factions are mobilizing supporters to challenge each other’s plans. Reports suggest Wike’s camp is targeting Ikenga Ugochinyere, a representative from Imo State, for his criticism of Wike and the Damagum-led NWC. This move is seen as part of a broader strategy to consolidate power by removing or silencing opponents.

Some NWC members have reportedly reduced their participation in meetings due to growing disunity within the party, awaiting the establishment of a National Elective Convention planning committee next year.

Attempts to contact Damagum and PDP National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba for comments were unsuccessful. However, Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor dismissed the claims, stating it’s normal for individuals to pursue their interests within the party.
