Following a major power outage, Nigeria’s electricity generation has surged to 5,093.54 megawatts, up from a drastic drop to just over 800MW within 24 hours.
Despite widespread concerns, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has denied reports of a national grid collapse, attributing the disruption to line tripping rather than a full system failure.
Power Generation Fluctuations
The Federal Government had recently celebrated a milestone achievement of 6,000MW in power generation, but this was short-lived as output dipped sharply on Friday, March 7, 2025.
According to data from the Independent System Operator, the grid peaked at 5,284MW at 5 a.m., but by 2 p.m., power generation had plummeted to 803MW, causing supply shortages across the country.
By 4 p.m., many power plants had yet to resume operations, further exacerbating outages in several regions.
TCN Responds to Blackout Concerns
Addressing the situation, Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, stated:
“This was a case of line tripping, not a grid collapse. The incident at 2 p.m. led to reduced electricity supply, but efforts are underway to restore full capacity.”
However, the drop in power allocation led to service disruptions, prompting several electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to notify customers about the outage.
- Ikeja Electric confirmed the system outage, stating that restoration was in progress in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
- Eko Electricity Distribution Company cited reduced power allocation from TCN as part of grid stability measures.
Ongoing Efforts to Stabilize Power Supply
The Federal Government and TCN have pledged to stabilize the national grid, with ongoing efforts to enhance monitoring systems and increase power evacuation capacity.
As Nigeria continues its battle with energy challenges, authorities assure citizens that steps are being taken to prevent future large-scale outages.
