The Ondo State Police Command has refuted circulating reports suggesting that a vehicle in the convoy of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was involved in a tragic accident that claimed the life of a young girl in Akure.
The First Lady had visited Ondo State on Thursday to launch the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme, where she also distributed 10,000 professional kits, including Crocs and scrubs, to midwives across the South-West.
However, an online publication alleged that her convoy was responsible for the death of a nine-year-old girl in the Oba-Ile area of Akure. In response, the police described the report as misleading and false.
According to a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Olufunmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, preliminary investigations and eyewitness accounts confirmed that the fatal incident was caused by a hit-and-run driver operating an unregistered white Lexus vehicle, and not by any car associated with the First Lady.
“A witness who saw the crash immediately pursued the fleeing driver on a motorcycle,” the statement noted, adding that this account was corroborated by others at the scene and the girl’s grieving parents.
The police also corrected misinformation in the initial report, clarifying that the victim was seven years old, not nine, as earlier claimed.
In a show of compassion and commitment, the state’s Commissioner of Police personally visited the bereaved family and assured them of a thorough investigation into the incident.
“At no point was the First Lady’s convoy involved in this tragedy,” the police spokesperson emphasized.
