In a swift response to the spread of fake news, the Nigeria Police Force has apprehended a 38-year-old man, Destiny Ekhorutomuen, for allegedly using social media to circulate false and inflammatory content aimed at tarnishing the police force’s reputation and inciting public unrest.
On December 8, 2024, operatives from the National Cyber Crime Centre arrested Ekhorutomuen in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area, Edo State.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the suspect created and managed several social media accounts to publish misleading and provocative posts about the Nigeria Police.
The police expressed deep concerns over the deliberate spreading of falsehoods, stating that such actions pose a significant threat to national security, public trust, and societal stability.
ACP Adejobi emphasized that the police would not tolerate such actions and reiterated that using social media to incite disorder or damage public institutions is a criminal offense under Nigerian law.
“The deliberate spread of false information erodes public trust, undermines societal cohesion, and poses risks to national security,” Adejobi stated.
He also urged Nigerians to be more responsible with the information they share online, stressing that maintaining peace and unity in the country requires collective effort.
The police force has vowed to continue its zero-tolerance policy toward acts that threaten national stability.
Citizens are reminded to exercise caution and responsibility when using social media and sharing information.
