Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has described the relentless attacks on communities in Bokkos and Bassa Local Government Areas as outright genocide against the natives—not mere farmer-herder clashes as often portrayed.
Speaking during the Experience Plateau: Art Meets Fashion event in Abuja, Mutfwang insisted the state remains unbroken in its spirit of peace and hospitality, despite the recent killings that claimed the lives of at least 52 people, including children, on March 28, 2025.
“Life must go on. Plateau must move forward. The genocide on the Plateau will come to an end,” Mutfwang declared.
Attackers Targeted Sleeping Villagers and Funeral Gatherings
The governor lamented the brutal nature of the attacks, revealing that some victims were murdered while attending wakes, while others were slaughtered in their sleep. He called on the international community to pay close attention to what he described as a coordinated attempt to break the Plateau people’s spirit and identity.
“May their blood cry out for justice,” he said solemnly.
Plateau to Focus on Empowerment, Creativity, and Security
Governor Mutfwang emphasized that despite the crisis, Plateau is committed to transforming through culture, tourism, and creative enterprise. He noted ongoing collaborations with the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) to revive skills among rural artisans and upgrade local textile industries.
No More Impunity: Killers Will Be Prosecuted
While addressing Plateau indigenes in Abuja, Mutfwang assured them that all those behind the killings would be prosecuted. He vowed not to allow those arrested to walk free, promising full legal action against perpetrators.
“The lives lost in Bokkos will not be in vain,” he affirmed.
Irigwe Tribe Fears Extinction Amid Rising Death Toll
The Irigwe people of Bassa LGA are crying out, fearing extinction as attacks continue. According to the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), independent data reveals that between 2001 and March 2025, the region has witnessed 2,866 attacks resulting in 1,107 deaths, 20,836 homes destroyed, and 27,330 farms lost.
Northern CAN and Political Groups Demand Urgent Action
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the North condemned the attacks, calling them barbaric and unacceptable. Similarly, the League of Northern Democrats (LND) demanded an independent probe, while the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in vulnerable areas.
“We Will Keep Farming, No Matter What”
Governor Mutfwang assured farmers across Plateau that farming activities will go on despite the security threats. He promised increased security presence and support for communities during the farming season.
