Peter Obi Speaks Out: “My Life and Family Are Under Threat”

The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has raised serious concerns about the state of democracy and freedom of speech in Nigeria.

In a heartfelt message, he revealed that he, his family, and those close to him have been receiving threats following his New Year message that critiqued President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

In a post on his X handle, Peter Obi said, “My New Year message has led to threats against my life, my family, and those around me.

Felix Morka, the APC’s National Publicity Secretary, accused me of crossing the line and warned of consequences.

If I’ve crossed any line, I ask for clarity, but I won’t stop speaking the truth as our nation drifts toward authoritarian rule.”

Obi’s supporters, known as the Obidient Movement, have condemned the threats, calling them a dangerous sign of Nigeria’s shift toward repressive governance.

Dr. Tanko Yunusa, the group’s spokesperson, expressed deep concern over the comments made by Felix Morka on Arise TV, which they believe imply a direct threat to Obi’s life.

“Mr. Felix Morka’s words—‘Peter Obi has crossed the line and has what’s coming to him’—are not just reckless but a blatant endorsement of violence,” Yunusa said. “This is an attack not only on Peter Obi but on Nigeria’s democratic principles.”

The group also challenged the APC to clarify what “lines” Peter Obi allegedly crossed and emphasized that the Nigerian constitution guarantees every citizen the right to freedom of expression.

They urged security agencies to take these threats seriously and hold those responsible accountable.

Reacting to the claims, the APC denied threatening Peter Obi and accused his supporters of spreading misinformation.

According to a statement on the party’s X handle, “There was no threat against Peter Obi. The comments have been twisted to fit a false narrative.”

Felix Morka criticized Peter Obi’s political commentary, describing it as irrational and unproductive. “Instead of uniting the nation, Peter Obi has chosen divisive narratives. He should focus on learning from his loss in the 2023 elections,” Morka said.

The Obidient Movement remains resolute in its support for Peter Obi, urging Nigerians to resist any attempts to silence dissenting voices. “If any harm comes to Mr. Obi, his family, or his associates, the Nigerian government must be held accountable,” Yunusa stated.

They called on Nigerians to protect democracy and demand accountability, justice, and freedom of expression. “We won’t be silenced. Together, we can build a just and equitable Nigeria,” the group concluded.

Peter Obi’s revelation highlights growing concerns about the suppression of free speech and democratic rights in Nigeria. As the political climate heats up, many Nigerians are questioning the government’s commitment to upholding constitutional values.
