The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has donated N20 million to two Colleges of Nursing Sciences in Imo and Anambra states—Holy Rosary College of Nursing in Ahiara Catholic Diocese, Mbaise, and Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital College of Nursing Sciences in Ihiala.
Supporting Healthcare Education
During his visit on Friday, Obi presented N10 million to each institution. At Holy Rosary College of Nursing, he handed over the cheque to Most Rev. Simeon Nwobi, the Bishop of Ahiara Diocese, at the college’s construction site.
At Our Lady of Lourdes, he presented the donation to Students’ Union Government (SUG) President, Miss Anigbo Chisom Mary, in the presence of excited students.
Obi emphasized the importance of healthcare and education, describing them as the foundation of national development. He praised the Catholic Diocese of Ahiara for investing in nursing education, calling it a significant contribution to Nigeria’s future.
Commitment to Education and Healthcare
Obi reiterated the need for the government to prioritize education, including ensuring timely salary payments for teachers. He advocated for free and accessible education at the primary and secondary levels and pledged continued support for the nursing colleges to help them become centers of excellence in healthcare training.
Gratitude from Religious and Academic Leaders
Bishop Nwobi expressed gratitude for Obi’s generosity, acknowledging his consistent efforts to support national development. He confirmed that Holy Rosary College of Nursing would officially commence operations next year and invited Obi to its opening ceremony.
Very Rev. Fr. Okoro revealed that the college, which began construction in late 2021, would offer programs in nursing, midwifery, pharmacy, cardiology, and laboratory sciences.
At Our Lady of Lourdes, SUG President Miss Anigbo Chisom Mary thanked Obi for his continued support, calling him a role model for students.
