The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is making headlines with its recent move to invite former President Goodluck Jonathan to consider running for the 2027 presidency under their banner. Ibrahim Abdullahi, the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, expressed disappointment at the thought of Jonathan choosing another party, given his deep roots within the PDP. Abdullahi reminded everyone of the significant role the party has played in Nigeria’s political history and hopes Jonathan will return to finish what he began.
This invitation comes hot on the heels of campaign posters for Jonathan’s 2027 run popping up, sparking talk of his potential return to the political scene. These posters, organized by a group called “Team New Nigeria,” suggest there could be serious backing for Jonathan, especially among northern political leaders.
At the same time, the PDP’s future is uncertain. The party is gearing up for a crucial National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in February 2025, which could determine its direction. This meeting is expected to address ongoing leadership issues, including the controversy surrounding acting National Chairman Umar Damagum. There’s growing pressure for him to step down, as many within the party are unhappy with his leadership. What happens at this meeting could be a game-changer for the PDP and have a big impact on Nigeria’s political future.
