PDP Governors Meet in Ibadan Over Rivers Crisis, Tompolo Assures Fubara’s Comeback
Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) umbrella gathered in Ibadan, Oyo State, for a two-day crucial meeting aimed at addressing key concerns affecting the party—chief among them, the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The meeting, which began yesterday, will also focus on the PDP’s legal challenge at the Supreme Court regarding the federal government’s decision. According to PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the forum also seeks to tackle the leadership crisis in the South-South and issues surrounding the National Working Committee (NWC).
Meanwhile, former MEND leader, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, broke his silence on the matter during his 54th birthday celebration at the Aziza temple in Gbaramatu. He reaffirmed his support for Fubara and declared that the embattled governor would soon return to office.
“I have never fought and lost. The Ijaw Nation will not be conquered. Those calling me silent are wrong—I can never betray my people,” Tompolo asserted, while urging continued support for President Tinubu, whom he described as not being a bad person.
Dagogo Files Lawsuit Against Tinubu, Others Over Fubara Suspension
In a legal twist, Dr. Farah Dagogo, a former federal lawmaker, has taken President Bola Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, and the Rivers Sole Administrator Vice Admiral Ibok-Etteh Ibas (rtd) to court.
Dagogo is challenging the legality of the state of emergency declaration and Fubara’s suspension.
A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt has granted permission for substituted service of the summons and scheduled May 12, 2025, for hearing. Dagogo’s legal team claims the defendants’ actions violate constitutional provisions.
Ijaw National Congress Condemns Destruction of Fubara’s Billboards
Adding to the tension, the Ijaw National Congress (INC) has decried the removal and defacing of billboards bearing Fubara’s image across Rivers State.
The INC’s President, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, described the actions as “barbaric” and “provocative,” stating that they were likely intended to incite violence from Fubara’s supporters to justify the ongoing emergency.
Okaba also criticized the Sole Administrator’s recent appointments and budget plans, labeling them illegal and unconstitutional. “The governor was not impeached—only suspended—so what justifies tearing down his billboards?” Okaba questioned.
As the political storm continues to swirl in Rivers State, all eyes remain on the May 12 court hearing and the PDP’s next moves following their strategy session in Ibadan.
