The Oyo State Government has officially rolled out a free health insurance scheme for 10,000 primary school pupils, reinforcing its commitment to accessible healthcare and quality education.
The initiative was launched at the Ibadan Civic Centre, Idi-Ape, by the Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, who emphasized that the program would ensure students remain healthy and focused on their studies.
“This scheme will guarantee that our children learn in a conducive environment while maintaining sound health. It is a crucial step toward securing their future,” Lawal stated.
Key Highlights of the Scheme:
✅ Covers pupils from 90 schools across 18 local government areas.
✅ Provides Insurance Scheme ID cards to beneficiaries.
✅ Aims to extend coverage to all 33 LGAs in Oyo State.
Celine Lafoucriere, Chief of UNICEF Lagos Field Office, praised the initiative, calling it a major step toward universal health coverage. She stressed that no child should be denied medical care due to financial constraints.
“Healthcare access is a social and economic necessity. This scheme ensures that pupils, especially in hard-to-reach areas, receive proper medical attention, setting them up for a brighter future,” she said.
Nureni Adeniran, Chairman of OYOSUBEB, commended the efforts of OYSHIA in implementing the program, pledging ongoing support for its sustainability.
With 10,000 children benefiting in the first phase, the Oyo State Government aims to expand the initiative to reach more students across the state.
