Oyo State Government Warns Residents Against Illegal Waste Disposal on Road Medians

The Oyo State Government has issued a stern warning to residents over the indiscriminate dumping of refuse on road medians and other unauthorized locations.

Dr. Morohunkola Thomas, the Director-General of the Oyo State Mobilisation Agency for Socio-Economic Development (OYMASED), made this known in a statement released in Ibadan on Thursday.

According to Thomas, the growing trend of improper refuse disposal is becoming alarming, as many residents now neglect proper waste channels. He emphasized the dangers this habit poses, especially with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) forecasting possible flooding in the state this year.

“Throwing waste into drainages leads to blockage, and this is a major cause of flooding. With the rainy season here, we must act fast to prevent avoidable disasters,” he said.

He further urged residents to embrace proper waste management practices and warned that offenders would face legal penalties.

“Our cities, particularly Ibadan, are becoming too dirty. This is not the kind of environment we want. Anyone caught dumping waste illegally, especially on road medians, will be appropriately sanctioned. Business owners whose shops are surrounded by dumped refuse will also be held accountable,” Thomas added.

He called for collective action and cooperation with Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration in its mission to maintain a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment for all.

Let’s work together to keep Oyo clean! Say no to illegal dumping—dispose of your waste properly and encourage others to do the same.
