An Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has dismissed the case against Queen Naomi Silekunola, renowned broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat, and school principal Abdullahi Fasasi over the tragic December 2024 stampede that claimed 35 children’s lives.
Delivering the verdict, Justice B.K. Olawoyin of Court 8, Ring Road, Ibadan, ruled that holding the defendants accountable could discourage well-meaning individuals from engaging in humanitarian efforts.
The accused had faced a four-count charge, including conspiracy, negligence, and failure to ensure security at the Christmas Funfair held on December 18, 2024.
However, the court found no basis to proceed with the case.
Speaking after the ruling, Hamzat expressed relief, appreciating the court’s decision while reaffirming his commitment to humanitarian work.
However, he stated that he would no longer collaborate with any organization to host similar events in the future.
“I have personally organized such gatherings in the past without any casualties. This unfortunate incident is a painful lesson,” Hamzat stated.
