Osun Monarch Claims Youths Beat Him in Front of Police Officers

A traditional ruler in Osun State, Oba Jelili Olaiya, known as the Ajeniju of Halleluyah, has alleged that he was assaulted by some angry youths while police officers watched.

The incident reportedly occurred at his palace, which also serves as a makeshift mosque, during preparations for Jumat prayers.

According to the monarch, trouble began after he appointed a Chief Imam for the community, a move that sparked unrest among some youths. The group not only vandalized his palace but also disrupted the religious service, creating chaos.

In a statement to journalists, Oba Olaiya explained that police officers had earlier visited his palace to discuss the matter.

Following the briefing, reinforcements were deployed to prevent violence. However, at around 11 a.m. that Friday, the hoodlums invaded the palace.

“The officers, including those from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, were present during the attack. Despite being about 18 in number, they failed to prevent the violence,” the monarch stated.

Oba Olaiya clarified that the appointment of the Chief Imam and the Jumat prayers were conducted in front of his palace, not on Ido-Osun land. He added that the Chief Imam of Ido-Osun had complained to the local Divisional Police Officer (DPO), alleging that the monarch’s actions required his approval.

“The DPO visited me to address the issue, but I explained that I was not on Ido-Osun land. Despite this clarification, the attack still took place under the watch of security operatives,” Oba Olaiya lamented.

Efforts to reach the police spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, and the NSCDC representative, Kehinde Adeleke, for comments were unsuccessful as their phone lines were unreachable.
