Violence Erupts Over Osun LG Secretariats
OSOGBO — Tensions flared in Osun State yesterday as a violent clash between supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) left eight people dead and many injured.
The crisis erupted when sacked local government officials under the APC attempted to resume office at various council secretariats.
According to reports, the PDP lost five members, while the APC claimed three of its supporters were killed. The ongoing dispute stems from conflicting court rulings over the legitimacy of local government elections.
How the Crisis Unfolded
As early as 8 AM, elected council officials arrived at their offices in multiple LGAs, including Boripe, Ilesa-West, Obokun, Odo-Otin, and Irewole.
However, armed men suspected to be PDP loyalists allegedly stormed the secretariats, firing gunshots to disperse the APC officials. In response, suspected APC thugs retaliated, escalating the violence.
Governor Adeleke Orders Security Takeover
Reacting to the bloodshed, Governor Ademola Adeleke directed security agencies to take control of all local government secretariats to prevent further violence.
“The illegal takeover bid by the sacked APC chairmen and councillors has led to unnecessary bloodshed. Security agencies have been instructed to ensure peace,” Adeleke stated.
Police Investigating the Crisis
Osun State Police spokesperson Yemisi Opalola confirmed that authorities were investigating the incident and would take appropriate action to restore order.
NASS Caucus Calls for Federal Intervention
Members of the Osun State National Assembly Caucus urged President Bola Tinubu and the National Security Adviser to intervene and prevent further escalation.
The situation remains tense, with security forces on high alert to prevent further violence.
