Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has raised concerns over the recent directive by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) that limits the distribution of palliatives during the holiday season. Obi argues that such restrictions may discourage acts of charity and make life even harder for struggling Nigerians.
The IGP’s move was intended to regulate relief material distribution, preventing chaos and ensuring public safety. However, Obi believes this approach fails to consider the pressing need for solidarity, particularly during times of economic difficulty.
“Preventing Nigerians from helping one another during the festive season is both insensitive and harmful to community spirit,” Obi said. He stressed that charity initiatives are essential, especially now, when many are grappling with financial hardships.
While Obi acknowledges the importance of maintaining order, he urges the police to find a more balanced approach that doesn’t hinder the goodwill of citizens. “We must ensure security without limiting the generosity that can bring relief to the needy,” he added.
The former governor of Anambra State also called for policies that would support and encourage charitable activities, especially during challenging times like these.
“With the economic difficulties we face, charity is more important than ever,” Obi concluded. “We must create an environment where kindness and generosity can flourish.”
