In a heartfelt reflection, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has attributed part of his longevity to the profound influence of the late U.S. President Jimmy Carter. Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100, was a long-time friend of Obasanjo.
Speaking to Channels Television from his home in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Obasanjo recounted their friendship, which dates back to 1978 when Carter visited Nigeria during Obasanjo’s tenure as military Head of State. Although he refrained from sharing specific details, Obasanjo credited Carter with being a source of strength and inspiration in his life.
He described the late Carter as a true friend of Nigeria and Africa, as well as a global champion of justice and fairness. Carter’s presidency (1977-1981) left a legacy of fostering Nigeria-U.S. relations, while his post-presidency years were dedicated to promoting democracy, addressing health challenges, and maintaining a modest, exemplary lifestyle.
Obasanjo, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1976 to 1979 and later as a democratically elected President from 1999 to 2007, praised Carter’s unwavering advocacy for global good. He emphasized that Carter’s simplicity, dedication, and moral integrity continue to inspire leaders and citizens worldwide.
The passing of Jimmy Carter marks a significant loss not just for Nigeria and Africa but for the entire international community, Obasanjo remarked.
