NSCDC Officer Dies, 5 Policemen and Soldier Injured in Abia Auto Crash

UMUAHIA—Tragedy struck in Abia State as a personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) lost his life, while five policemen and a soldier sustained injuries in an auto crash at Ibeku, along the Umuahia-Bende-Ohafia federal highway.

How the Accident Happened

Reports indicate that the security operatives, who are part of the state’s joint security task force—including the Police, Army, and NSCDC—were traveling in a vehicle that veered off the road and plunged into a ditch.

The incident occurred on a narrow and deteriorating section of the highway.

Motorists and local residents of the Ihie Ibeku community rushed to the scene, assisting in rescuing the victims and transporting them to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, before security agencies arrived.

Casualties and Rescue Efforts

Eyewitnesses recounted that out of the 10 security personnel on board, one NSCDC officer was confirmed dead, while eight others suffered injuries and were promptly taken to FMC, Umuahia.

“We initially thought one officer had gone missing, as he had disembarked before the crash, but he was later found alive,” a witness revealed.

Official Reactions

When contacted, the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, stated that she does not speak for ‘Operation Crush,’ the joint security task force involved.

Meanwhile, Governor Alex Otti expressed condolences to the state’s joint security task force and the bereaved family.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, the governor assured that his administration would ensure the injured personnel receive top-quality medical care for a speedy recovery.

Otti further commended the joint security task force for its efforts in maintaining security across the state and pledged continued government support to sustain their operations.
