In the wake of yet another heartbreaking tragedy in Plateau State, Hon. Ishaya David Lalu, the House of Representatives member representing Mangu/Bokkos Federal Constituency, has spoken out firmly, declaring that no one will take their ancestral land for cattle grazing.
His remarks follow the gruesome attacks that left 51 people dead across Mangu and Bokkos communities.
Lalu described the situation not as a crisis, but as a direct attack on his people by suspected Fulani militia. “This is not a misunderstanding. Innocent people are being killed for no reason, and we can’t keep quiet anymore,” he said.
“Our People Are Peaceful, But This Must Stop”
According to Lalu, the people of Mangu and Bokkos have always welcomed strangers and lived peacefully, especially due to their agricultural and business-friendly culture. However, he laments that unknown attackers have repeatedly targeted these communities.
“These are deliberate killings. We don’t know their motive yet, but we are determined to end this,” he stated.
Security Forces Mobilized as Lawmaker Calls for Federal Help
Even though the National Assembly is currently on recess, Lalu revealed that he reached out to the Inspector General of Police, who responded swiftly by dispatching top security officials to restore order.
He also acknowledged the proactive response from the Plateau State Governor and praised the deployment of “Operation Rainbow” security personnel and an Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) to the area.
“In Whurti village alone, 36 people were killed. That’s just one location. The total death toll is 51 so far, with several others injured,” Lalu confirmed.
Suspected Motive: Land Grabbing?
While investigations are still ongoing, Lalu mentioned suspicions that the attacks might be related to land grabs for grazing. However, he emphasized that such claims must be validated by the security agencies.
“This is our ancestral land. Everyone has their place of origin. No one can come here and take what belongs to us,” he said defiantly.
Relief Efforts Underway Amid Federal Government’s Marching Orders
As displaced residents seek shelter and food, Lalu disclosed that he is working closely with NEMA and the Refugee Commission to bring relief materials to the victims. “Many people are homeless. I am lobbying the relevant agencies to get them some form of comfort,” he said.
He also commended President Tinubu for instructing security forces to prioritize peace in the region. “The president is doing his part, and we are hopeful things will improve,” he added.
Call for Unity and Vigilance
Lalu stressed the importance of community unity and self-defense, urging his people to remain vigilant. “We’re not aggressors, but we must protect ourselves. Government support is crucial, but we must also take initiative,” he said.
As investigations continue, the people of Plateau State are left mourning and hoping for a lasting solution to the violence that has disrupted their peace for far too long.
