Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has issued a firm warning to foreign airlines operating in the country.
He declared that no airline will receive approval for its summer schedule unless it partners with local catering companies for onboard meal services.
New Policy to Boost Local Economy
Keyamo had previously mandated, on October 15, 2024, that foreign airlines must patronize Nigerian caterers starting from January 1, 2025.
The goal is to support local businesses and enhance the nation’s economy.
During a stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos on February 28, 2025, Keyamo expressed concerns over airlines’ reluctance to comply.
He made it clear that unless they provide proof of partnership with Nigerian catering companies, they will not be allowed to operate flights during the summer season.
Upgrades to Nigerian Airports
In addition to the catering policy, Keyamo announced that Maiduguri Airport is undergoing upgrades to become the first international airport in the North-East.
He also directed the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to streamline the Air Operator Certificate (AOC) issuance process, aiming for faster approvals.
FAAN’s Commitment to Aviation Safety
Olubunmi Kuku, Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), highlighted the authority’s efforts to improve safety across airports. This includes:
- Regular runway friction tests and de-rubberization to ensure aircraft safety.
- Better wildlife management to reduce bird strike incidents.
- Electrification projects in Lagos to tackle power outages.
- Recertification of major airports and rehabilitation of Hajj terminals in several states, including Maiduguri, Kano, Abuja, Ilorin, and Katsina.
Public Reaction to Keyamo’s Directive
While some Nigerians praised the minister’s initiative, others questioned the readiness of local caterers to meet international safety and dietary standards.
