Viral Video Misleading, Says NNPC
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has firmly denied allegations that it sells low-quality petrol with a high burn rate, following the circulation of a viral video making such claims.
In a statement released on Saturday, February 15, 2025, by its spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, the NNPCL dismissed the accusations, stating that the claims were based on unverified and amateur research lacking credibility.
Background: Viral Video Sparks Controversy
The controversy started after a content creator shared a video online, alleging that petrol bought from an NNPC filling station in Ojodu Berger (₦945 per litre) burned out faster in a generator compared to petrol purchased at MRS in Alapere (₦925 per litre), which lasted longer.
However, NNPCL refuted the experiment, stating that the petrol sold at its Ojodu Berger station was sourced from the Dangote Refinery, just like the one at MRS.
“The NNPC Ltd strongly refutes the false and misleading allegations made in a viral video. This claim is entirely baseless and does not reflect the high-quality standards of our products,” the company stated.
NNPC Defends Fuel Quality
NNPCL emphasized that its petrol is carefully formulated to meet the highest industry standards, ensuring efficiency, durability, and environmental sustainability.
“It is important to highlight that a large percentage of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) sold at NNPC retail stations in Lagos is sourced from the Dangote Refinery, which strictly adheres to global industry standards.”
The company further accused economic saboteurs of spreading falsehoods to mislead the public and tarnish NNPC’s reputation.
Legal Action Against Misinformation
In response to what it calls deliberate misinformation, NNPC warned that it would take legal action against individuals or groups spreading false claims.
“NNPC Ltd will not tolerate deliberate attempts to misinform Nigerians. Those responsible for such malicious activities will be held accountable under the law.”
Call for Public Caution
The NNPCL urged Nigerians to ignore misleading online content and instead rely on verified sources for accurate information regarding the quality of its fuel.
“We remain committed to ensuring the availability, affordability, and quality of fuel for all Nigerians while maintaining global industry standards,” the statement concluded.
