The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and FIRST Exploration & Petroleum Development Company Limited (FIRST E&P) have announced a major oil discovery in the Songhai Field, OML 85.
Reports confirm that the well encountered over 1,000 feet of hydrocarbon-bearing sands across eight reservoirs, with excellent reservoir properties, reinforcing its commercial potential.
Further evaluations will be conducted to optimize resource estimates and development plans.
Major Boost for Nigeria’s Energy Sector
Alongside this discovery, NNPC Gas Marketing Ltd (NGML) and its joint venture partner, NIPCO Gas Ltd, have signed a Gas Sale and Purchase Agreement (GSPA) with Ssonic Petroleum Ltd.
The deal will supply 80 million standard cubic feet (mmscf) of natural gas per day to a proposed Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant in Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos, for the next 20 years.
According to NNPCL’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, the discovery and gas deal align with Nigeria’s goal of boosting oil production, optimizing costs, and promoting gas as a cleaner energy source.
“This discovery reaffirms the potential of Nigeria’s offshore reserves and highlights the importance of strategic collaboration in expanding our hydrocarbon resources,” Kyari stated.
With these developments, Nigeria’s energy sector is on track for significant growth, reinforcing its position as a key player in Africa’s oil and gas industry.
