The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on Nigerians to gear up for a potential nationwide boycott of telecommunication services following the Federal Government’s approval of a 50% increase in telecom tariffs.
In a statement issued by the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, the union strongly condemned the tariff hike, labeling it a severe economic burden on citizens already battling inflation and reduced purchasing power.
According to Ajaero, the average Nigerian worker currently spends about 10% of their income on telecommunication services, and this tariff hike would push the figure to an unsustainable 15%.
“This decision by the Federal Government, executed through the Nigerian Communications Commission, is unjustifiable and insensitive to the plight of Nigerian workers and the masses,” Ajaero remarked.
He further criticized the government for swiftly approving the tariff increase while taking nearly a year to implement the recently revised minimum wage.
NLC’s Call to Action
The NLC has urged the Federal Government, the Nigerian Communications Commission, and the National Assembly to halt the implementation of this tariff hike, advocating for a more reasonable and humane review process.
“If no action is taken, we will have no choice but to mobilize for collective action, including a nationwide boycott of telecommunication services, to reverse this punitive decision,” Ajaero emphasized.
The labour union remains resolute in its commitment to defending the rights of Nigerian workers and ensuring that government policies prioritize citizens’ welfare over corporate interests.
