The Federal Government has confirmed that telecommunications tariffs in Nigeria will increase soon, though not as drastically as proposed by operators.
Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, reassured Nigerians that the hike would be moderated to protect consumers while ensuring sustainable growth in the sector.
During a meeting with Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in Abuja, Dr. Tijani disclosed that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) would soon finalize and announce the new tariff rates.
He clarified that the requested 100% increase by telecom operators would not be approved.
“We are committed to protecting Nigerians from excessive tariffs while enabling telecom companies to make the necessary investments to improve service delivery,” Tijani said.
The minister noted that the government is now stepping in to co-invest in telecommunications infrastructure, a move aimed at enhancing service quality nationwide.
He emphasized that private sector-led investments have often focused on areas with high returns, leaving underserved communities behind.
Dr. Tijani also addressed complaints from telecom users regarding unclear data and call charges.
He assured Nigerians that the NCC is revising its regulations to make billing more transparent and consumer-friendly.
The Executive Vice-Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, highlighted that the ongoing discussions are aimed at achieving a balance between affordability and sustainability in the industry.
He promised that the commission would communicate the final tariff decision within weeks, ensuring transparency for all stakeholders.
The anticipated tariff hike underscores the need for improved connectivity and service quality. While this change may impact telecom costs, it’s an opportunity for Nigerians to demand better services and accountability from operators.
