A major milestone has been recorded in Nigeria’s healthcare sector as Kelina Hospital, a private medical facility with branches in Abuja and Lagos, announced it has successfully carried out over 6,000 prostate surgeries since its establishment in 2012.
This information was made public during a media briefing held on April 18, 2025, at the hospital’s Victoria Island office in Lagos. Speaking at the event, the hospital’s president, Dr. Celcus U. Undie, said the institution performs over 100 prostate-related surgeries annually, including both benign and cancerous cases.
According to Dr. Undie, Kelina Hospital was the first in Nigeria to introduce Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP), a modern method used in treating prostate enlargement. As of this April, the hospital has conducted 500 HoLEP procedures since introducing the surgery in 2018.
The hospital also claims to have pioneered Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy (commonly known as keyhole surgery) for prostate cancer in Nigeria back in 2012, with assistance from international experts.
Additionally, it plans to introduce Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy (RARP) later this year, making it one of the first to adopt robotic-assisted prostate surgeries locally.
In the area of kidney stone treatment, Kelina Hospital reports it was the first to perform Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) and Laser Lithotripsy in Nigeria as early as 2011. It also implemented plasma sterilization technology in 2015 to enhance infection control during surgeries.
These developments mark notable advancements in specialized surgical procedures within the country’s private health sector. However, independent verification of some of the “firsts” claimed by the hospital was not immediately available.
At the event, Nigerians were encouraged to consider local healthcare options, especially where standard medical services are now available, in a bid to reduce the need for costly treatment abroad.
