Human rights activist Olamide Thomas shares her ordeal and gratitude after detention, emphasizing the power of collective resistance and unity against oppression.
Nigerian human rights activist Olamide Abiodun Thomas has spoken out following her release from detention, expressing gratitude to her supporters and highlighting the importance of collective resistance against oppression.
Olamide was arrested in Lagos and transported to Abuja under the directive of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and Muyiwa Adejobi.
The allegations against her included defamation of Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu.
Reflecting on her ordeal, Olamide noted that her safety was threatened during her time in police custody but shared that her resolve only grew stronger.
“The more they pressured or inflicted pain, the more determined I became,” she said, describing her detention as an opportunity to strengthen her commitment to fighting injustice.
Olamide extended heartfelt thanks to Nigerians who supported her, particularly Comrade Omoyele Sowore, convener of the Take It Back (TIB) Movement.
She credited Sowore for ensuring she had essential supplies during her detention.
“Comrade Sowore’s contributions to humanity are immense. He stood by me throughout the entire ordeal,” she remarked.
She also acknowledged the roles played by the Socialist Workers League (SWL), whistleblower groups, and media practitioners who stood for justice despite challenges.
During her weeks in detention, Olamide said she dedicated herself to enlightening inmates on political consciousness, promoting unity, and advocating against tribalism.
“I’m glad I could reorient people, fostering discussions centered on humanity,” she said, adding that her experiences inspired hope for a revolutionary movement in the near future.
Olamide concluded with a powerful statement: “The great resistances and unity of voices against oppression kept my soul and fist high throughout the experience.”
