Customs Seizes Nearly 2 Tons of Cannabis Worth N398 Million in Lagos
In a decisive operation against drug smuggling, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Western Marine Command, has intercepted 53 sacks of cannabis sativa weighing a total of 1,958kg, with a duty-paid value of N398 million at Ilase Sea Beach, Lagos.
Smugglers Abandon Boat, Officers Secure Seizure
According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Lomba Benjamin, the seizure took place about 200 nautical miles from Lagos Anchorage.
The Customs Area Controller, Paul Bamisaiye, revealed that smugglers attempted to escape by jumping into the sea, abandoning their boat filled with contraband.
“The boat was quickly secured and brought to our office, where we discovered 3,793 loaves of cannabis sativa divided into 53 sacks,” Bamisaiye stated.
Largest Cannabis Seizure Under Current Leadership
This operation marks the biggest single seizure of cannabis sativa under Bamisaiye’s administration. Just two months earlier, the command intercepted 15 sacks of cannabis weighing 538kg, valued at N107 million.
Stronger Measures Against Smuggling
Bamisaiye commended the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, for providing the necessary resources and equipment to support anti-smuggling efforts.
He assured that the seized drugs will be handed over to the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in line with standard procedures.
