Abike Dabiri-Erewa Calls on Nigerians Abroad to Champion National Unity
The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has urged Nigerians living abroad to uphold patriotism as a driving force for national progress.
Speaking at the 2025 Obafemi Awolowo University Muslim Graduates’ Association Abuja Iftar/Lecture Prayer, Dabiri-Erewa emphasized that patriotism plays a crucial role in fostering unity and development, both for Nigerians at home and in the diaspora.
Themed “Islam and Patriotism,” the event highlighted how Islam encourages love and commitment to one’s country.
In a statement signed by NiDCOM’s Public Relations officer, Gabriel Odu, Dabiri-Erewa noted that patriotism is deeply embedded in Islamic teachings, citing Prophet Muhammad’s strong affection for his homeland.
“As Muslims, patriotism is a core value of our faith. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) demonstrated immense love for his homeland, and as Nigerians, we must embody this principle by working towards unity, peace, and national development,” she stated.
Diaspora’s Role in Nigeria’s Progress
She encouraged Nigerians abroad to remain dedicated to nation-building, regardless of their location. Acknowledging the invaluable contributions of the diaspora, she highlighted their role in remittances, investments, and knowledge transfer.
“Our brothers and sisters abroad are some of Nigeria’s greatest assets. Their skills, resources, and unwavering love for the country must be harnessed to drive sustainable development,” she added.
Dabiri-Erewa also stressed the importance of Nigerians in the diaspora serving as positive ambassadors by excelling in their fields and reinvesting in Nigeria’s growth.
Patriotism Beyond Borders
The keynote lecture, delivered by Sheikh Abu Mazidatul Khaer bn Saeed, addressed misconceptions about patriotism among Muslims.
He explained that patriotism involves love, respect for leadership, and proactive contributions to national progress.
He emphasized that the Prophet Muhammad serves as a perfect example of patriotism, demonstrating dedication to his homeland through service and sacrifice.
A Call to Action
NiDCOM’s message is clear: patriotism isn’t just about love for one’s country—it’s about active participation in its growth.
Whether at home or abroad, every Nigerian has a role to play in shaping the nation’s future.
