NDLEA Arrests 251 Suspects in Benue, Seizes Large Drug Haul – 2024 Report

The Benue Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has reported a total of 251 arrests for various drug-related crimes in 2024.

Breakdown of Arrests and Convictions

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Makurdi, NDLEA State Commander, Mrs. Esther Musa, revealed that out of the 251 suspects, 220 were male, while 31 were female.

Further details show:

31 suspects convicted and serving various jail terms

39 cases dropped due to insufficient evidence

Others still facing trial

Major Drug Seizures in 2024

According to Musa, the command confiscated large quantities of illicit substances throughout the year, including:

Cannabis Sativa (1 ton – 175.7 kg)

Tramadol (43 kg)

Fitamin (0.27 kg)

Diazopharm (4.39 kg)

Codeine Syrup (156.1 kg)

Weapons and Explosives Recovered

In addition to drugs, the NDLEA seized:

Locally made pistols

Ammunition and explosives (Handed over to the military and police)

War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) Campaign

Musa emphasized that the WADA sensitization program was a major focus in 2024. The campaign educated the public on the dangers of drug abuse, trafficking, and cultivation through:

142 enlightenment programs in schools, religious centers, and communities

Collaboration with law enforcement, traditional leaders, and NGOs

> “It is better to prevent drug abuse through awareness than to chase drug dealers after the damage is done,” Musa noted.

Call for Better Rehabilitation Facilities

The NDLEA Commander appealed to:

Well-meaning Nigerians

NGOs

She urged them to help fund a standard rehabilitation center, as the current facility lacks proper resources, particularly for female drug users.

> “Right now, we do not have facilities for women. Many female clients seek rehabilitation, but we are forced to turn them away,” Musa added.
