As of October 2024, the combined statutory allocations to Nigeria’s National Assembly and the National Judicial Council (NJC) amounted to N564 billion. This significant disbursement reflects the government’s commitment to funding these critical institutions.
National Assembly: Between January and October 2024, the National Assembly received a total of N308 billion. This includes N172 billion disbursed between January and June, with subsequent payments totaling N86 billion in the months of July, August, and October. Additionally, in July, the legislature received N50 billion in two tranches for capital expenditures.
National Judicial Council (NJC): The NJC was allocated N256 billion over the same ten-month period. This comprises N170.8 billion received between January and June, with further allocations of N28.46 billion each in July, August, and October.
Earlier in the year, the House of Representatives advocated for allocating five percent of the national budget to both the federal legislature and judiciary. Subsequently, the National Assembly increased its 2024 budgetary allocation from N197.93 billion to N344.85 billion, marking its highest allocation to date.
These substantial allocations underscore the government’s dedication to ensuring the effective operation of the legislative and judicial branches. By providing these funds, the government aims to enhance the autonomy and efficiency of these institutions, enabling them to fulfill their constitutional mandates.
