The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on the Federal Government to investigate the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) over the delay in implementing the newly approved N77,000 monthly allowance for corps members.
Despite the government’s official approval of the increase from N33,000 to N77,000 in July 2024, corps members are yet to receive the new payment.
The Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, cited a lack of funds as the reason for the delay.
Students’ Body Demands Answers
Expressing frustration over the situation, NANS National Vice President for Inter-Campus Affairs, Felicia Akinbodunse, questioned why corps members were still receiving the old N33,000 allowance, despite assurances that the new payment would begin in February 2025.
“It is unfair that corps members are left out while federal and state workers are already receiving the new minimum wage,” Akinbodunse said.
She urged the Federal Government to investigate the cause of the delay, emphasizing that withholding the new allowance could demoralize corps members, especially given the rising cost of living.
NANS also announced plans to engage directly with NYSC leadership to seek answers on the issue.
