Namibia is set to make history as Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah takes office as the country’s first female president. Her inauguration on Friday marks a new chapter for the southern African nation, known for its stability and rich mineral resources.
Here are five key facts about the new leader:
1. A Staunch Ruling Party Member
Popularly known as NNN, Nandi-Ndaitwah has been a dedicated member of the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) since her teenage years.
The party, which led Namibia’s struggle for independence from South Africa, has been in power since 1990. Her victory in the November 2024 elections was widely expected, as she secured 58% of the votes under SWAPO’s banner.
2. A Veteran in Government
Nandi-Ndaitwah’s political career spans over three decades. She joined the National Assembly in 1990 and was first appointed as a cabinet minister in 2000, overseeing the Ministry of Women and Children.
Over the years, she has also served as Minister of Information, Environment and Tourism, and Foreign Affairs. In February 2024, she made history as Namibia’s first female Vice President before being elected as the nation’s leader.
3. Taking Office at 72
Born in October 1952, Nandi-Ndaitwah will assume office at 72 years old, leading a nation where over 70% of the population is under 34, according to the 2023 census.
She succeeds Nangolo Mbumba, who became president after Hage Geingob passed away in early 2024.
4. Conservative Views
The daughter of an Anglican pastor, Nandi-Ndaitwah holds conservative views on social issues. She has opposed the legalization of abortion, which remains restricted in Namibia.
In 2023, her party voted against same-sex marriage, reflecting the country’s largely Christian values.
5. Lived in Exile, Trained in Russia
During Namibia’s fight for independence, Nandi-Ndaitwah went into exile in Zambia before moving to Russia, where she joined the Komsomol, a communist youth organization.
She has also voiced support for North Korea, which has built several structures in Namibia’s capital.
As Namibia ushers in a new era, all eyes will be on President Nandi-Ndaitwah to see how she leads a youthful nation into the future.
