In a shocking turn of events, Khadija Ali, a woman in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has been arrested for allegedly abandoning her newborn baby, leaving the child in a vulnerable state along a bush path in Mpape, Abuja.
The incident has raised concerns about the emotional and financial struggles many face in today’s harsh socio-economic environment.
According to the FCT Police Command, the distress call that led to the rescue of the child came in the morning of January 3, 2025, around 10:00 AM.
Responding swiftly, police officers from the Juvenile and Women Care Section in Mpape discovered the baby wrapped in cloth, seemingly no more than a day old.
The officers immediately transported the infant to the Mpape Primary Health Care Centre for medical evaluation.
Thankfully, the baby was confirmed to be in stable condition after examination by healthcare professionals.
The police also revealed that the arrest of the mother, Khadija Ali, followed a tip-off from concerned community members.
During her interrogation, Ali confessed to abandoning her child, citing her inability to care for the baby due to financial hardship and the abandonment by her husband.
This heartbreaking revelation has sparked an ongoing conversation about the pressures faced by parents in challenging economic conditions.
Josephine Adeh, the Public Relations Officer for the FCT Police, condemned the incident, describing it as a serious violation of the Child Rights Act of 2003.
The Act specifically prohibits the abandonment and mistreatment of children, and Ali is expected to face legal consequences under Sections 14 and 16 of this Act.
“The FCT Police Command strongly condemns this act of child abandonment,” Adeh stated. “We are committed to protecting the most vulnerable members of society, and we will ensure that justice is served.”
The police further assured the public that the investigation would proceed, and Khadija Ali would be prosecuted accordingly.
In line with legal provisions, the rescued infant will be handed over to the Department of Social Welfare for appropriate care and protection.
