The Oyo State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has raised alarm over what they describe as the unlawful detention of several of their members. On Monday, the group took to the streets of Ibadan in protest, claiming their members are being unfairly targeted under the state’s anti-grazing law.
Led by the Serkin Fulani of Oyo State, Alhaji Yakubu Bello, and the association’s liaison officer, Adam Abdukadir, the group voiced their frustration to journalists, stating that the detained herders were innocent of the accusations levelled against them.
“Our members were wrongly arrested and remanded without being given the chance to defend themselves,” Bello said. He emphasized that the arrests were carried out by the state’s Rule of Law Enforcement Agency without due process.
The group further expressed displeasure over their exclusion from key state security and law enforcement committees, despite being major stakeholders in the region’s peace and agricultural activities.
MACBAN called on government authorities and concerned stakeholders to intervene in the matter, stressing their dedication to peaceful coexistence, public safety, and mutual respect in the state.
It is worth noting that the Oyo State House of Assembly had earlier passed an anti-grazing law aimed at curbing the destruction of farmlands and preventing violent clashes between herders and farmers.
