The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) is calling for a thorough investigation into the tragic killing of its Kwara State Chairman, Idrissu Abubakar.
The young leader was gunned down in front of his home in Oke Ose, Ilorin East Local Government Area, on Saturday night.
Tragic Assassination Shocks Community
According to reports, unknown gunmen attacked Abubakar around 10 p.m. shortly after he returned from Taraweeh prayers.
The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the incident, revealing that officers recovered five expended 7.62mm shells from the crime scene. His body has since been taken to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) for further examination.
MACBAN Calls for Swift Investigation
Reacting to the devastating news, MACBAN’s National President, Alhaji Baba Ngelzarma, expressed deep sorrow over the loss. In a statement released by the association’s National Secretary, Malam Bello Gotomo, Ngelzarma described Abubakar as a dedicated leader committed to the welfare of pastoralists in Nigeria.
“This is a tragic loss for our association and the entire livestock sector. Idrissu was a young leader full of vision and hope for the transformation of livestock production in Nigeria,” Ngelzarma lamented.
The association also revealed that Abubakar, 33, is the second MACBAN chairman to be assassinated this year. Just two months ago, Alhaji Sirajo Mairana, the newly elected Katsina State MACBAN Chairman, was also killed under similar circumstances.
A Growing Trend of Targeted Killings
MACBAN expressed deep concerns over the increasing number of targeted attacks on its leaders. According to Ngelzarma, over seven state and local government chairmen of the association have been killed by unidentified assailants in the last two years.
Additionally, MACBAN’s National Vice President, Alhaji Manir Lamido, has been missing since 2023 while traveling between Katsina and Kaduna States.
The association is now urging security agencies to act swiftly, not only to apprehend Abubakar’s killers but also to put an end to the disturbing pattern of assassinations.
A Nation in Mourning
The late chairman leaves behind two wives, six young children, and his aged mother. His death has sent shockwaves through the Fulani pastoralist community, with many calling for better security measures to protect their leaders.
As investigations continue, Nigerians wait for justice, hoping that authorities will take decisive action to bring the perpetrators to book.
