A fire outbreak on Sunday rocked the bustling Gbagi Market in Ibadan, Oyo State, destroying property worth millions of naira and sending waves of panic through the business community.
According to reports gathered by NIGPOST, the fire, which ignited around 1:23 p.m., razed two shops before emergency responders swiftly arrived to contain the flames. The Oyo State Fire Services, led by General Manager Akinyemi Akinyinka, confirmed that distress calls were received from the market’s police station and concerned traders.
“Gbagi Market was on fire, but our men have controlled the situation,” Akinyinka stated. “We got the first calls from our officers at Gbagi station, the DPO, and several market leaders. Our team arrived by 1:30 p.m., found two shops engulfed in flames, and quickly got the fire under control. They are currently working to cool the affected area.”
While the full extent of the damage is yet to be determined, many traders expressed heartbreak as they watched their goods burn, some helplessly.
The exact cause of the blaze remains unknown at this time, with investigations still ongoing. However, there are growing calls for improved fire safety measures in markets across the state.
