The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has emphasized the military’s commitment to strict protocols in executing airstrikes across Nigeria’s conflict zones.
His remarks followed the alleged accidental bombing in Zamfara State that claimed 16 lives, including members of the Zamfara Community Protection Guard (ZCPG).
To investigate the incident, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) deployed a fact-finding team led by Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet.
The team, working with local officials and stakeholders, aims to provide a comprehensive assessment and ensure transparency.
NAF spokesman Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa reiterated the military’s professionalism, stating:
“The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, has dispatched a team to investigate and deliver a detailed report to guide further actions.”
Reacting to claims of civilian casualties, General Musa highlighted the military’s precision in airstrikes and denied deliberate targeting of non-combatants:
“Before conducting airstrikes, we follow thorough monitoring and targeting protocols. These accusations often arise to demoralize our troops.”
In addressing terrorism funding, General Musa disclosed collaborative efforts by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and other intelligence agencies to block Boko Haram’s financial sources, including foreign sponsors and local levies.
AYCF Calls for Accountability
The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) expressed deep concern over the Zamfara incident.
AYCF President Yerima Shettima stated:
“This tragic loss of life highlights the devastating consequences of collateral damage in counter-insurgency operations. We urge improved precision, thorough investigations, and accountability.”
Terrorism Funding Under Scrutiny
General Musa noted that Boko Haram’s operational sustainability is linked to foreign sponsors and local fundraising through taxes and kidnappings.
Efforts to block these channels are underway with support from international allies.
“If we cut off their financial oxygen, we will significantly weaken their operations,” he stated.
