The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced the cancellation of centralized May Day celebrations in Rivers and Edo states, citing political interference and the imposition of emergency rule.
This decision has sparked a debate over the independence of the labor movement and the role of political authorities in labor affairs.
The NLC’s decision to cancel May Day celebrations in Rivers and Edo states has raised significant concerns, particularly regarding the imposition of emergency rule in Rivers State and alleged political meddling in Edo State.
The national leadership of the NLC, led by President Joe Ajaero, has directed that Workers’ Day celebrations in both states be scaled down and relocated to union offices rather than the usual central venues.
In Rivers State, the NLC opposes the emergency rule imposed by the state government, which led to the appointment of a sole administrator. The NLC has called for the restoration of democratic governance and has encouraged workers in the state to hold a peaceful rally within the Rivers State Council of the NLC.
The rally will emphasize the importance of democratic governance, better workers’ welfare, and the people’s desire for freedom.
Similarly, in Edo State, the NLC has accused the state government of interfering in the operations of its local council. Tensions between the state government and the NLC escalated after the government reportedly attempted to undermine the leadership of the NLC Edo State Council.
In light of ongoing efforts to resolve the crisis, unions in Edo have been instructed to observe May Day independently at their respective union offices.
The NLC’s leadership has also responded to a fraudulent circular, purportedly issued by an “Acting State Secretary” in Edo State, directing workers to attend a government parade.
The NLC dismissed this circular, calling it fake and an attempt to manipulate workers for political gain.
As May Day approaches, workers are encouraged to stand united for their rights and participate in local celebrations that emphasize the importance of democracy and fair governance.
