In an unprecedented operation, US authorities have arrested 538 illegal immigrants and deported hundreds more, just days into President Donald Trump’s second term.
This announcement was made on Thursday by Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who described the operation as the largest deportation exercise in the nation’s history.
In a post shared on social media platform X, Leavitt said, “The Trump Administration arrested 538 illegal immigrant criminals,” adding that deportations were carried out using military aircraft.
“The largest massive deportation operation in history is well underway. Promises made. Promises kept,” she declared.
Trump’s Tough Immigration Agenda
Fulfilling his campaign promise to overhaul immigration policies, President Trump has wasted no time in enforcing stricter measures.
He signed executive orders declaring a “national emergency” at the southern border, increased military presence in the area, and vowed to expedite the removal of “criminal aliens.”
Controversy Surrounding the Operation
Not everyone has welcomed the administration’s actions. Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka condemned an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid in the city.
In a statement released early Thursday, Baraka alleged that ICE agents detained both undocumented residents and citizens without presenting a warrant.
The operation coincided with the passage of a Republican-led congressional bill earlier in the week, which expanded pretrial incarceration for foreign criminal suspects.
