Lassa Fever Outbreak in Cross River: One Dead as Government Steps In

The Cross River State Government has confirmed an outbreak of Lassa Fever in Obubra Local Government Area, following the tragic death of a 30-year-old farmer from the Unincha community.

According to Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk, the state’s Commissioner for Health, the farmer had been battling the illness for several days before seeking medical help at the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (FUTHA), Ebonyi State.

Sadly, he tested positive for Lassa Fever on February 16, 2025, and passed away the following day.

Government Moves to Contain the Outbreak

In response, the state government wasted no time in activating the Lassa Fever Emergency Operation Center on February 18.

Health officials, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (SPHCDA), have been deployed to Unincha to curb the spread.

Efforts are currently focused on:

• Contact tracing to monitor those who had close interaction with the deceased.
• Community awareness campaigns to educate residents on Lassa Fever prevention.
• Decontaminating affected homes to eliminate sources of infection.
• Distributing medical supplies and protective gear in high-risk areas.
• Referring symptomatic individuals to healthcare centers for proper treatment.

With the early rains setting in, Dr. Ayuk has urged residents to stay vigilant, as Lassa Fever, cholera, and mpox pose significant health risks.

Lassa Fever is caused by the Lassa virus, which spreads through contaminated food or household items exposed to Mastomys rats.

The early symptoms often resemble malaria but can quickly worsen.

Symptoms to Watch Out For:

• Fever, headache, muscle pain, and sore throat.
• Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
• In severe cases, uncontrolled bleeding.

Health officials strongly advise the public to:

• Keep their environment clean and free of rodents.
• Store food properly in sealed containers.
• Avoid contact with rats and their droppings.
