FG to Deploy More Troops as Lakurawa Sect Expands
The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to deploy additional military forces to combat the Lakurawa terrorist group, which has recently expanded its operations from Sokoto and Kebbi in the Northwest to other regions, including Niger and Kaduna States.
The group, which has been active for several years, recently attacked Mera village in Kebbi, killing 17 people and rustling livestock.
In response, the Nigerian government has promised to increase military presence and establish new formations in affected areas.
Sokoto State, in particular, is strengthening its security measures by enhancing its infrastructure, providing logistical support, and launching public awareness campaigns.
The state has also formed a security committee involving local leaders to coordinate efforts.
In Niger and Kebbi States, local governments are collaborating with federal agencies to tackle the threat, with additional resources directed to security operations.
There is a strong emphasis on intelligence gathering and logistical support for local vigilante groups who have played a crucial role in assisting security forces.
The Defense Minister, Muhammad Abubakar, has assured that the Nigerian Armed Forces are determined to defeat the Lakurawa sect, which has been causing significant disruption across the region.
As security forces step up efforts, there are calls for permanent security deployments in these volatile areas to ensure long-term stability.
