Lagos Set to Close Marina-CMS Bridge for Repairs – Alternative Routes Announced

Lagos residents should prepare for major traffic diversions as the state government announces the temporary closure of the Independence/Mekwen Bridge (Marina-CMS route) for emergency repairs.

The closure will begin on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, and last until Monday, May 26, 2025.

This move, according to Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, is necessary to ensure the structural integrity of the bridge and improve road conditions.

Affected Routes & Road Closures

During the repair period, the following roads will be closed to vehicular movement:

  • The section of the road from National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) through Bonny Camp Bridge to Independence Bridge.
  • The Bonny Camp Underpass Bridge service lane inbound Independence Bridge.

However, the service lane from Ahmadu Bello Way to Ozumba Mbadiwe will remain open for traffic.

Alternative Routes for Motorists

To ease movement during the closure, the government has mapped out alternative routes:

✔️ From Ahmadu Bello Way to Victoria Island:

  • Use Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Akin Adesola Street, Falomo Roundabout, Obafemi Awolowo Road, Ring Road.

✔️ From Ahmadu Bello Way to 3rd Mainland Bridge:

  • Take Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Akin Adesola Street, Alfred Rewane Road, Osborne Road, Ring Road.

✔️ From Ahmadu Bello Way to Marina/CMS:

  • Use Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Akin Adesola Street, Falomo Roundabout, Obafemi Awolowo Road, J.K. Randle Road/King George V Road.

✔️ From Marina/CMS to Ahmadu Bello Way:

  • Motorists will have through-traffic access.

Traffic Control Measures & Advisory

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be deployed to ensure smooth traffic flow throughout the closure period.

Commissioner Osiyemi has urged residents to remain patient and plan their journeys accordingly. He emphasized that the temporary closure is part of rehabilitation efforts by the Federal Ministry of Works, aimed at improving road infrastructure for a better commuting experience.
