The Lagos State Government has initiated a comprehensive review of the Oshodi Transport Interchange (OTI) to tackle existing challenges and enhance its functionality for better commuter experience.
Linking OTI with the Rail System
According to Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the review focuses on integrating OTI with Lagos’ Rail Mass Transit system, particularly connecting the Red Line and Blue Line rail projects for a seamless transportation network.
The Oshodi Transport Interchange, a multi-level terminal, was introduced during the tenure of former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to ease traffic congestion and modernize public transport.
Designed to handle 50,000 passengers daily, the facility allows commuters to switch between buses and other transport modes via pedestrian bridges and skywalks.
Government’s Plan for Optimization
The Ministry of Transportation has begun stakeholder engagements to assess the current challenges and implement solutions that align with global transport standards.
Key steps in the review process include:
- Site Inspection: A thorough evaluation of the interchange to identify areas needing improvement.
- Collaboration with FERMA: Working with the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to ensure regular road maintenance for improved accessibility and safety.
- Enforcement Measures: Tackling street hawking and congestion issues that impact pedestrian and commuter safety by enforcing strict regulations.
Call for Stakeholder Input
Osiyemi encouraged stakeholders to submit recommendations before the next round of inspections, stressing the state’s commitment to making OTI a vital hub in Lagos’ integrated transport system.
“With collaborative efforts and proactive policies, we aim to enhance public transport services and deliver a seamless commuting experience for Lagos residents,” he stated.
