The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed allegations of unlawfully detaining a suspect, Nosiru Owolabi, for six weeks without a court order.
The command also refuted claims of rights violations and torture made by lawyer Bayo Akinlade.
Allegations of Illegal Detention
Akinlade, in a social media post, accused the Tactical Squad stationed at Second Rainbow, Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, of detaining Owolabi without a valid court warrant while denying him access to legal representation and family visits.
The lawyer also alleged that the police were abusing their authority, detaining individuals as they pleased.
Police Respond with Court-Backed Evidence
Reacting to the allegations, Lagos Police Spokesman, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that Owolabi had been on the police wanted list for multiple armed robberies, kidnappings, and murders before his arrest on January 25, 2025.
“The suspect was arrested due to his involvement in numerous violent crimes, including armed robbery, cult-related killings, and kidnappings, which had raised significant public safety concerns,” Hundeyin said.
He further revealed that a court order authorized Owolabi’s detention to allow for thorough investigations and the arrest of other suspects linked to his criminal network.
Weapons Seized, Public Safety at Risk
Following a search warrant execution, the police recovered two firearms from Owolabi’s possession. Authorities believe more dangerous weapons are yet to be retrieved, posing a serious threat to public safety.
Suspect’s Rights Were Respected, Says Police
Hundeyin dismissed claims of ill-treatment, clarifying that Owolabi’s wife visited him regularly and that his well-being was being monitored.
“The community where Owolabi resided fully supports his arrest, acknowledging the importance of removing a dangerous individual from the streets,” he added.
Public Urged to Report Police Misconduct
The Lagos Police Command encouraged citizens to report any concerns regarding police misconduct to the Police Public Relations Office or the Complaint Response Unit for prompt resolution.
“Rest assured, the Lagos State Police Command, under CP Olohundare Jimoh, remains committed to justice, public safety, and upholding human rights,” Hundeyin concluded.
